WPI has supplied many cold room chiller systems for pharmacies, restaurants, wineries, breweries, meat processing plants, computer rooms, blood banks, and others. Typical installations include a split system chiller with outdoor condensing units and indoor pump tank. Packaged chillers, modular chillers, closed loop glycol systems can also be utilized. Custom System design available as well.

Cold storage refers to the storing of goods (any type) in a refrigerated area. All types of heat is are removed from the storage containers, or the room itself. Containers and room size can vary by industry. They can range from warehouse size in a distributing center, to research labs, or portable transportation devices. Cold storage helps prevent the growth of bacteria, the spoilage of food and keep items at a constant cold temperature.  Cold storage allows for the preservation of items.

The room or containment system is insulated. This is normally done with an air tight, water resistant polyurethane coating on the construction of the wall. The walls can be constructed of steel, lumber, plastic, or glulam. The storage unit prevents cold air from leaving, and helps prevent the outside temperature from penetrating the product.  If warm air enters the cold storage area, higher refrigeration cost and wasted energy could be a side effect. Adjusting temperature can be done manually, or electronically with a thermostat.

Home refrigerators are also considered cold storage. The units are on the small side and not used for commercial use. In the past cold storage, used ice boxes. Ice boxes, were lined with tin, and uses straw for insulation. Ice was brought by the milkman, when milk was delivered door to door. This is no longer the case because of evolution of cold storage.

Many different types of industries use a cold storage system. Grocery stores use them to keep their products fresh to gain profits. Almost all grocery stores use a freezer/ refrigeration system. Restaurants and kitchens use cold storage systems to keep meat and vegetables on hand for fresh cuisine. Electronics keep storage rooms cool, to keep dust and unit from overheating.

Whaley Products can supply split system chiller with outdoor condensing units and an indoor pump tank. Packed chillers, modular chillers, closed loop glycol systems can also be utilized. Custom systems can be designed as well.

Some Typical Applications:

· For Storage of fruits, vegetables & perishables.

· For storage of bulk drugs

· Chiller/Freezer Rooms – rooms are normally built to clients requirements, they can be anywere in volume from 5 m³ to over 5000+ m³. The tempretures are usually in the range of -5 °c to +15 °c for chiller rooms , and -6 °c to -40 °c for freezer rooms and can be used to store a large number of different products.

·   · Blast Freezer/Chiller Rooms – products that require fast cooling to stop formation of ice crystals require high capacity cooling and freezing refrigeration systems. These systems have to be specially designed and caluculated to offer best efficency and reliability.

·   · Transport Refrigeration – small sized cold storge units that are equipped in trailers, trucks and vans to transport chilled or frozen goods. Small refrigeration units or the newer method of installing eutectic plates are usually used here.

·   · Spiral/Tunel Freezer or Chillers – these are basically conveyor systems that are placed inside a refrigerated coldroom. The products move on the conveyor system until its chilled to the required temperature.
